New Year's Eve in Stavanger 2026/27

Stavanger's waterfront offers a compact New Year's Eve plan: dinner near the centre, a short walk to a lawful viewing area and municipal fireworks at midnight. The city currently lists nine shared displays, including Vågen; check its final 2026/27 notice before setting out.

Where are the Stavanger New Year fireworks?

The municipality currently lists nine shared midnight display locations: Vågen in the centre, Judaberg, Vikevåg, Madlatua, Hundvåg, Varden, Byhaugen, Vålandstårnet and Jåttåvågen. The Vågen and Judaberg displays are launched from barges for fire safety. Check the city page again close to 31 December for any operational change.

Is Vågen the best place to watch?

Vågen is the simplest central choice if your dinner or hotel is nearby. The harbour is compact and walkable, but the exact viewing position and any restricted launch area matter. Follow the municipality’s map and staff instructions. A harbour-facing room does not automatically guarantee an unobstructed view.

Do not launch private fireworks in the centre

The municipality prohibits private fireworks in Stavanger centre, the wooden-house district, small-boat harbours and other high-risk locations. Municipal displays are run by professionals. Enjoy the shared show from an open public area and respect barriers around launch sites. See the official fireworks page before bringing any fireworks of your own.

Where should you book dinner?

Book a table near your chosen viewing area. Ask for the 31 December menu, deposit, drinks, final price and whether the table remains available until midnight. A regular menu and normal opening hours may not apply. If the meal is across town, a taxi or bus connection could become the weakest part of the evening.

Hotel and private celebrations

A central hotel makes the walk home short and useful on a wet or windy night. Ask whether a New Year dinner or viewing space is included in the room rate; a harbour address by itself does not establish either. Compare central and harbour locations before reserving the room.

Getting home after midnight

Kolumbus may operate holiday timetables, so check the specific 31 December and 1 January service rather than a normal Thursday or Friday. Save the return route and a walking alternative. Taxis can be busy immediately after the display, and vehicle access beside a crowd may be restricted.

Winter weather and what to wear

Stavanger can be damp, windy and cold beside the water. Wear layers, a waterproof outer layer and shoes with grip for wet stone. If the weather is rough, a nearby indoor venue is a better base than waiting on the harbourfront for a long period. Keep children well back from barriers and the water.

What about a New Year’s Eve fjord cruise?

Do not assume ordinary Lysefjord sightseeing departures run on 31 December or include fireworks. If an operator advertises a special cruise, check the exact quay, departure and return time, indoor space, weather policy and what view the itinerary promises. A daytime [Lysefjord cruise](/lysefjord-cruises/) is a separate decision from a midnight celebration.

What to do on 1 January

Allow a slow start. A harbour walk, Old Stavanger or a confirmed open museum suits a late night better than a tightly timed regional trip. Restaurants, tours and transport may use holiday hours; check any fixed plan directly. Keep an outdoor excursion movable if the weather changes.
